Jared Newman / IDGHi-Fi Cast is a fine option for Chromecast and Google Home music if your phone has enough storage. Here's what those who own a music collection can do after Google Play Music shuts down.

Option 2: Hi-Fi Cast for Android

Our spatial tests measure a speaker’s ability to reproduce stereo sound in all directions, taking into account localizability, balance, wideness, distance, and directivity. Please note that wideness is 0 for mono speakers and for speakers that cannot deliver a significant stereo effect. The Home Max’s sub-score of 124 indicates very good behavior in the dynamics area. Attack in midrange frequencies is precise, bass precision is globally very satisfying, and punch at loud volumes is very good.

But there’s still room for improvement, especially in the high-ends, where instruments such as hi-hat cymbals lack precision, and at soft volumes , where punch is slightly lacking. Better camera and timeline views.

For one, some Google Home recordings in the past were leaked thanks to contractors that had access to the recordings. Basically, when the Google Home can’t understand a certain command, Google keeps the audio clip to analyze it to try and fine tune how the speaker understands regular speech. The Google Home speakers light up to show when they’re listening, but sometimes they might be triggered on accidentally by something that sounds similar to the hotword. Build a home audio system – or just fill a room with sound, and listen to music, news, podcasts and more wherever you are in the house. With any luck, Google will see the light and provide a way for YouTube Music users to keep casting their own record collections.

Additionally, the overall dynamics performance is particularly impressive at soft and even quiet levels with sharp attack, precise bass, and good punch. Our dynamics tests measure how well a device reproduces the energy level of a sound source, taking into account attack, bass precision, and punch. I tested this by playing the song Havana by Camilla Cabelo at four different volumes . Then I played back a recording of myself saying “Hey Google” and played it from a separate speaker at distance of 5, 10, 15, and 20 feet. Sure, this isn’t the most scientific test ever devised but it does highlight how at higher volumes the microphones on the speaker have a hard time picking up voices.

I did have some issues with the speaker hearing me when I spoke to it while music was playing, but I’ll get into that later. If you have a Google Chromecast, getting anything to play on your TV is seamless. Even pausing and playing the content is pretty quick and reliable just by telling the speaker to pause or resume playback.

That said, browsing is basically impossible because you’re interfacing with your TV through voice. You have to know what you want to watch, and then tell the Google Home Max to cast it. Once installed, Hi-Fi Cast automatically detects all the music on your device and lets you browse by artist, album, genre, or playlist.

Volume

Our volume tests measure both the maximum loudness a speaker is able to produce and how smoothly volume increases and decreases based on user input. The Google Home Max delivers a very good timbre performance. At nominal volume, the frequency ranges are well balanced, with particularly consistent midrange frequencies . That said, high-end is slightly lacking, contrary to the Big Four company’s promise. The bass response, moderately affected by a lack of low-end extension and a few resonances, remains fairly good overall.

Behind the fabric are four lights that only show up when you’re adjusting something on the speaker. They’ll turn off a second after you change the volume or after it’s done listening to what you said. Around back you’ll get the power supply input, a 3.5mm input, and a physical mute switch. The mute switch doesn’t stop music playback, it just turns off the microphone so it isn’t always listening for the hotword. Speaking of which, I found that the microphones on the Google Home Max aren’t too good at picking up my voice when music was playing around 75% or above. I found myself borderline yelling “Okay Google” and sometimes, even then I would just have to walk over to it and physically lower the volume.

At soft and quiet volumes, the tonal balance remains impressively consistent, as do all the dynamics sub-attributes . This makes the Google Home Max a relevant speaker for listening to music and podcasts, and even for watching videos at soft volumes. Speaking of videos, since the latency induced by both Google Cast and Bluetooth connections is quite significant, the auxiliary input at the back of the device is highly welcome.

Further, the Smart Sound technology does, as promised, allow the speaker to adapt efficiently to its environment. Therefore, it is capable of dealing with complex acoustics, such as in bathrooms. It’s hard to recommend a smart speaker over a dedicated home audio setup or any other Bluetooth speakers, but the Google Home Max has weaved its way into my life in a way other products haven’t. I admit, I’m already in the group of people that use a Google Home, but that’s mainly for setting alarms, timers, and asking it questions while I cook. With the Google Home Max I still do all of those things, but all while listening to music or podcasts. That said, if you can get one for cheap somewhere it’s worth considering.

Plex is a popular program for hosting media files on one device and streaming them to others. Plex’s iOS, Android, and desktop web apps all support casting, so you can use them to send music to your Google Home speakers or Chromecast devices. This even works with any Google Home speaker groups you’ve created. With an overall score of 145, the Google Home Max ranks second-best among all speakers we have tested to date, after Harman Kardon’s Citation 200. Maximum volume is very good, and at loud volumes, punch is particularly impactful, which makes the Google Home Max a very well suited speaker for parties.

But the Google Home Max self-adjusts in order to make sure the sound stays consistent. This is good if you don’t feel like going through the trouble of EQing your music yourself, but not so good if you do because you won’t have that level of control. All you get is the basic bass and treble sliders in the Google home app.
